Hiya,

I can't believe I'm posting when I still have so much of that proposal to do. I must have a very low evolutionary survivability rating. I also wanted to prove that, despite being ridiculously busy I have done (at least part of) this week's reading.
I am pleased (& not a little smug) that I previously had the idea that the disciplines within which we study create the objects which they describe. I actually found this an immensely positive thing because it helped account for the fact that intellectual worlds 100 years apart are nearly incommensurable. More importantly, it gives a purchase: Creating our own issues we have more control of them & can feel justified in following an agenda & not being subject to 'immutable truths'. Nice.
It could also be a good argument for paying closer attention to jargon & its proliferation. Cultural studies, for instance, often uses very complex terminology. Although it is not necessarily less the case that the objects being described justify this complexity, it at least makes you stop and wonder if they do, if we create them ourselves.
...&...&..arrggg!! Just when I was going on to slam him for using all that stupid pseudo-scientific jargon in the latter half of the article, the reading changes.
I wonder, now, if anyone is actually going to do the reading - with two assignments due on the same day.
Oh well.
Ok - So I read that. Seemed pretty comprehensive about the ambivalence expressed towards doctors and medicine, how everything is either too much or too little. Interesting that it doesn't cover the recent litigation / insurance fallout in the medicine vs. patients struggle (when are we getting back MDA btw!!). I liked the idea of moving from valorised doctors to media-sponsored, valorised patients; I hadn't thought of it that way.
Hmm..don't really have a favourite TV show at the moment. I do absorb quite a bit of news - it's difficult to avoid talk of medicare, safety nets and bulk-billing at the moment. Gah- just look at all the double speak in that link - does anyone actually know what it all means. I remember spending a very long time reading about it all once and then getting very angry at the Coalition for cutting the guts out of our health-care system - but - the conversation has moved back to terms which I don't have a reference for...at least when I'm this tired.
